The Deutsche Oper Berlin has pulled Mozarts Idomeneo from their program for fear of provoking Islamic protest and retribution. The production showed severed heads of Jesus, Mohammed and Buddha.

Vor einigen Jahren, als die Schönste Germanin noch bei einem Dotcom arbeitete, entdeckte sie während einer USA-Reise mit diesem Autor ein Plakat in einem Rekrutierungsbüro der Marines. Der Text lautete ungefähr so: "Wed promise you sleep deprivation, mental anguish, and muscles so sore that youll puke, but we dont like to sugarcoat things" Das schien ihr genau der richtige Spruch für die Wand hinter ihrem Schreibtisch zu sein. Also ging sie in das Büro hinein.

While thousands of Germans gathered just south of Berlin yesterday to protest a provocative neo-Nazi demonstration held to glorify fallen Wehrmacht soldiers of the Battle of Halbe, Chancellor Merkel and other government and diplomatic corps officials will be taking part in ceremonies in Berlin today marking Germanys Volkstrauertag or Peoples Day of Remembrance.

Introduction I have been teaching adult Sunday School off-and-on for 25 years now, first as a Lutheran, then as a Covenanter (for my German guests, that is an evangelical offshoot of the Swedish Lutherans). I learned early that if people are given the textbooks for free, attendance drops off and few people do the homework. If people are required to pay for the materials, they value them more. This went against my principles at first. Is the Gospel not free? Do the just not live by faith and not works? But there it is. What people are given free, they treat as valueless. Unless someone tries to take it, of course. Then they are outraged.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. On either side of the Atlantic, it seems. Germanys grand coalition under Chancellor Angela Merkel has been in power for a year now but other than having applied a band-aid or two on existing social systems here, the coalition partners have accomplished little more than a benevolent Stillstand (standstill) on the reform front. The real effort is being placed in positioning themselves for the next election, which will be soon enough. And the real question is whether this will blow up in their faces or not.

If you believe everything you read, and I would never recommend doing this, of course, Germany suddenly finds itself in the wonderful world of economic upswing. Signs of this Aufschwung are being reported everywhere and it appears at times that the country has been afflicted by a giant and completely unexpected Wohlstanswelle (wave of prosperity).

As I mentioned in a previous post, NATO More Active on Global Security: From Brussels to Riga, NATO summit will be held at Riga, the capital of Latvia on November 28th and 29th. This is a landmark of history from the following aspects. At this summit, leaders of Western democracies meet and talk vital issues on global security at the capital of a former Soviet republic. More importantly, NATO is expanding global commitment to tackle dreadful challenges in the 21st century, such as WMD proliferation, terrorism, and so forth. Despite the rift over the Iraq War, America and Europe are developing further cooperation for world peace and stability. The media talk so much about the impact of US midterm election on transatlantic relations, but it is meaningless.

In the first part of this two series article we talked about several aspects of life and success in Holland and in the UK. We talked about the economy, taxation, fitness, smoking, social classes and a few other topics of interest that help us compare different aspects of a successful lifestyle from a European perspective. In this article, we will expand upon the initial discussion and talk about life in Germany and in Spain. We will also conclude with some general thoughts on how life in Europe differs from the US and how our definition of success is influenced by the culture that we live in.

Mark Steyn is, as so often in the last years, claiming yet again that the future belongs to Islam. Point is, demographics aren't quite as decisive as they used to be, and large, uneducted masses are mostly a danger to themselves nowadays. Not to mention the fact that there only are 15 million Muslims in all of Europe and that their birthrates also aren't all that high in several countries. German Muslims have a birthrate below replacement level, at about 1.8 babies per woman, and it is rapidly declining even further. The danger of substantial Muslim immigration also is very slim. Our expulsion policies towards Third World immigrants already are inhumane in their draconian harshness, and they are only going to get harsher over time. 'Our' Muslims also aren't a monolithic mass. Especially in Germany we have a lot of Alevites, whom 'mainstream' Muslims consider heretics. There is no way that the Alevites make common cause with the more conventional Muslims whom they in return see as a threat to themselves.
