According to a Congressional R about Americans Are the "Friendliest Nation" Sun, 10.12.2006 While some newspapers and magazines run very critical or even Anti-American opinion pieces, some of them also write very pro-American commentaries: "America: The Misunderstood World Power" is the headline of an article in the travel section of a about Are you riding the Wohlstandswelle yet? On a recent trip to Europe I was reminded of the fact that Europeans are so much more conservation oriented and energy efficient than Americans. The lights in hotel hallways are off until you walk by the sensor or push a button; they go on for two minutes and then go off again. Motion sensors everywhere that turn lights on in hallways, stairwells and public spaces. In Munich I saw something for the first time: public escalators that dont move until someone walks onto it and passes the motion detector. All over downtown Munich there were non-moving escalators, waiting.

Imagine... a 23 year old Soldier that is stationed over at Germany has been deployed to Iraq. His family lives in the States, so his fiance. He has a couple of buddies in Germany, but they are military themselves. Now that it is time to pack up the stuff to go back to Germany. Nobody will be there, no family, no close friends, no fiance to say "Welcome Home, we are so happy to have you back" There is no crowd like in the States, no waving flags and hundreds of people that simply want to give him a hug just because he survived.

Do we here in Switzerland take any real interest in our relations with the USA? Do Swiss-US relations concern us the way German-US relations concern the Germans? As Google never lies, one has no choice but to conclude that there is simply no comparison here. Google the term German-US relations and you will be rewarded with 80,000 hits, whereas the analogous search for Swiss-US relations yields a paltry 958 results.

I hear some, if not many Americans complaining that Germany seems to have forgotten about the history of German-American post-war history, especially about the airlift and the contribution of John F. Kennedy and his successors as presidents of the United States. It might well be that we don't remember this history as it would be appropriate - but it is not forgotten.

Theres a good essay about the pope flap up at Spiegel Online. Its by Claus Christian Malzahn, and it should please even the droning bores over at Davids Medienkritik, who have the reputation in the US as sharp critics of anti-Americanism in German journalism. In a big blurry way, of course, its true that a lot of German journalists are irritatingly kneejerk and Amerikaskeptisch, but the guys at Medienkritik need fodder every day, and sometimes they just speculate like old ladies leaning out their windows in a little European town, passing on offenses to their prejudices as if they were experts, or even well-informed.

Crossed-out symbols on are very popular here. Thats probably because saying no to everything is so popular here, too. You know, verboten ist alles, was nicht ausdrücklich erlaubt ist (everything is forbidden unless expressly allowed). Some of my personal favorites are the crossed-out crapping dog or the crossed-out cell phone signs, but all the others are thoroughly entertaining, too. Well, almost all the others.

Once the Berlin Wall came down, all the other ones did, too. Oder (right)? I mean, the falling of the worlds most famous wall had to have had a flattening effect upon anything else like it left standing. Well at least thats what a lot of us hoped or felt. It should have, but it didnt. On the contrary, more miles of wall exist now than before 1989 and there are new iron curtains out there wherever you look - and these are only the physical ones.
