The Austrian psychiatrist and 1930s anti-fascist author Wilhelm Reich once noted (I paraphrase) "The Big Lie gets lots of public attention and is carried forward as in a big parade, with many hungry listeners, while the truth must come limping behind on crutches, struggling to catch up, panting with it tongue hanging out." So it appears a similar situation has developed internationally, with respect to historical events during and after World War II, and most especially after the 9-11 terror attacks against the USA. While the reader may be accustomed to believing that Big Lies only originate within "the establishment" or "mainstream", history shows us many examples where little lies which begin far outside the mainstream, over time slowly grow and gain acceptance to become a new "Truth" which at least within a certain variable percentage of the population can hardly be questioned. Both Stalinism and Hitlerism in the 20th Century had such modest origins, eventually leading to the greatest social destructions and genocidal slaughters of recent history. So it seems the first years of the 21st Century offer us yet another set of tempting falsehoods, with large numbers of "hungry listeners". Several articles in mainstream newspapers have recently highlighted one facet of the matter, in the uncritical and eager acceptance of 9-11 conspiracy theories: "Anti-US books find an eager audience among German youth" (Christian Science Monitor, 10 Dec. 2003), "9/11 Conspiracy Theory Books Dominate Debate at Frankfurt Book Fair" (Deutsch Welt, 10 Oct. 2003), "Conspiracy Theories about Sept.11 get Hearings in Germany" (Wall Street Journal, 29 Sept. 2003).(1) While it would be an error to think the problem is only in Germany -- it is not -- the growing acceptance of this particular "non-mainstream" Big Lie is clearly more widespread in Europe and the Middle East than the USA.

The Minutemen think a 2000-mile wall from San Diego, California, to Brownsville, Texas, buried ten feet into the earth, guarded by a Border Patrol with guns, will be just the thing to save America's traditions and institutions. Charles Krauthammer, a neo-conservative who isn't a Minuteman but fears both terrorist infiltration and a second civil war between Mushy-Hearted Liberals and the Patriotic Foes of Immigration, agrees...

People are still talking about a wall or a fence along the Mexican-American border, because it seems both bills cruising through Congress call for some kind of barrier. The House bill calls for a full-scale Berlin Wall; the Senate version wants 370 miles of a triple-layer "fence."

It’s no secret that the Germans are concerned about immigration. Integration courses and citizenship tests were recently big news items that made a lot of noise in the national media. An “integration summit” is being planned at the highest government levels in the coming weeks. Leading Muslim representatives will be invited to a German Islam Conference in Bonn later in the fall. All of this mirrors the common perception that Germany seems to be standing before an ever-increasing and overwhelming wave of immigrants demanding entry into the country.

Somebody call the cops. Or just tap the shoulder of one or two of the people standing next to you at one of those World Cup public viewing areas if you prefer, he or she is bound to be one (they’re everywhere these days because of security, you see). This has to be reported immediately. The Germans are beginning to discard their post-war reluctance about thinking, feeling or even, gulp, displaying anything positive about their country. What, you say? The cop standing next to you is waving a damned flag, too? I mean jeez, what is that? Let’s study this phenomenon. Is all of this simply due to the World Cup and Germany’s “obligation” to wave flags along with everybody else? Has a soccer tournament managed to settle an issue overnight what generations of Germans haven’t been willing to openly and honestly address? Yes. And no.

Help me, I'm German. Or at least that's the feeling I got after having read "Keine Zeit und immer im Plan" by Susanne Gaschke in Die Zeit. She has painted a picture of her countrymen that is not only right on the money (for my money), she has also opened up my eyes as to why it is that they and I so frequently, no, practically always rub each other the wrong way: We are way much too alike. Relationships like that just can't work.

The national conscious of the Nazi atrocities in German memory has led to cautiousness towards conflict in the German public and government. While this position is a natural reaction and in many respects noble, it has unfortunately decreased Germany's ability and consequent role to be an international peacekeeper and decision maker. Indeed, Germany's relations with traditional powers such as the United States and Great Britain have undoubtedly been affected by the apprehension associated with German worldwide involvement. In order to sufficiently repair important diplomatic relationships and raise its role as a purveyor of social democracy, Germany must engage in a plan to increase militarization with the appropriate adjustment of political stance to encourage public opinion towards proactive international contributions.

In January, 1948 England and America decided to combine their two sectors in Berlin creating a business zone called Bizonia. The purpose was to assist the Germans in reconstruction, and it was decided that if the German's had a bigger hand in the process, the process would proceed faster. The Soviets however, were staunchly against the merger, seeing the embryo of a new German state, which they both feared, and which would, given the freedom of the west, soon outclass the Russian efforts in the east. Russian opposition however may have created the German state sooner than anticipated. France, England and America decided in June of '48 that a new German Federal Republic would be established by 1949 at the latest. Stalin was incensed. On June 23rd, a Train headed from the western sectors to Berlin was halted and a rail removed from in front of the train. The Berlin Blockade had begun.

How could Germany have possibly felt any better about itself than after Friday's breathtaking victory against Argentina? I wouldn't know. But strangely, on that very day, Chancellor Merkel's government managed to receive its lowest ratings yet. Nobody is satisfied with the way things are developing here, it seems - or failing to develop, I should say. The health reform is about as convincing as the tax reform is. And that's not very convincing at all.
